Mumbai: Coronavirus grips fear on Sex Workers of Mumbai’s famous red light area – Kamathipura looked empty on Saturday and Sunday
Mumbai: Even as the deadly novel Coronavirus has impacted on the business sectors and instilled fear in the minds of people, it has also impacted on Mumbai’s Kamatipura, the famous red light of the sex workers. Most of them have been found bidding good-bye to their profession and the area itself for a temporary period till such time the virus gets away. Moreover, no customers are willing to take any risk to their lives as they fear they may contract the virus from the sex workers.
Speaking with Hello Mumbai News , a sex worker Sarita ( name Changed ) said, for the last one week she is facing many problems.as the customers have stopped visiting Kamathipura area .Not only me but even other sex workers are gripped in fear as without money how will they survive. They have to pay for their room plus food and other personal expenses. Most of them have left for their native place.
Another sex worker said, “this Coronavirus has severely affected our bussiness as nobody is visiting us and our survival has become very difficult .All roads, bye-lanes and have turned vacant. We are also taking precautions and most of the girls are in no mood in carrying on with their prostitution business.
One Local Tailor of Kamathipura said , “our bussiness totally depends on these local sex workers, but this time when our season is beginning, most of the sex workers have become jobless and their business have been severely affected.We tailors too are also affected and as of now our business had dipped to 40 percent ever since the outbreak of Coronavirus.
One of the Brothel Keeper of Kamathipura said, “we are also taking precautions and we have asked all girls the to stop.soliciting customers and we too are trying to stop the sex trade .
