Union Budget 2025 Quote: Umesh Unnikrishnan Director WeSpark Startup Association Shares his views on Post Budget

Hello Mumbai Business Desk

Start Ups and expectation from them has been in the news forever drawing comparisons with leading countries where the provisions and eco-system for start ups are very evolved.

Every budget is looked upon with 2 major objectives – Intent & Execution.

The budget 2025 has highlighted some important areas of support for the Start Ups.
As a company focusing on innovation, the business environment involves higher risks of failures. In such a scenario, the major focus of the company should be towards developing their products & services and increasing their business instead of financial constraints.

Announcement of Taxations benefits & credit extension in the budget does support this major challenge faced by start ups.
The other inclusion of 10K crore fund of funds in various sectors brings opportunities for the start ups in the sector and will provide them with a chance to upgrade themselves for global markets. These funds should be supporting ideas to market initiatives instead of on R&D alone.

Empowering women, schedule caste and schedule tribes for the first time entrepreneurs is also a significant approach in creating new opportunities. This does show the intent of the government.

While all these announcements are clearly positive, what remains to be seen is the actual impact on the eco-system. Start ups need a larger gestation period and continuous support to thrive. The policy makers need to create mechanism to monitor the delivery of the benefits to the Start Up through eco-system partners like us. The execution will only make the difference is we are to be considered as serious contenders in the segment.
