MUMBAI – The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Mumbai unit, has registered a case against a State Tax Inspector for allegedly demanding and agreeing to accept a bribe to process annual GST returns.
The accused has been identified as Avinash Meshram, who is currently posted as a State Tax Inspector at the GST Bhavan in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai.
Brief About the Incident:
The complainant, who works as an Account Manager for a private company, had approached the GST office regarding the filing of the company’s annual GST returns. According to the ACB, Meshram initially demanded a bribe of ₹1,00,000 to facilitate the work.
Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant filed a formal complaint with the Anti-Corruption Bureau on December 19, 2025.
Investigation and Verification
Following the complaint, the ACB conducted a verification probe. During this process:
- The accused, Avinash Meshram, reduced his demand to ₹50,000.
- After further negotiations, he finally agreed to accept a settled amount of ₹30,000.
Evidence gathered during the verification confirmed that the public servant attempted to obtain an illegal gratification for performing his official duties.
A case has been registered against Meshram under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The investigation is currently being led by Police Inspector Sandeep Patil, under the guidance of Additional Commissioner of Police (ACB) Sandeep Diwan and other senior officials.
