Mumbai City Desk Hello
MUMBAI – In a historic administrative shift, senior IAS officer Ashwini Bhide has been appointed as the new Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This appointment marks a significant milestone, as Bhide becomes the first woman to head India’s wealthiest civic body in its 130-year history.
Bhide, a veteran 1995-batch officer of the Maharashtra cadre, succeeds Bhushan Gagrani, who is set to retire on March 31, 2026.
A Proven Track Record
Commonly referred to as Mumbai’s “Metro Woman,” Bhide is widely recognized for her previous tenure as the Managing Director of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL). She was instrumental in the execution of the ambitious Metro Line 3 (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ) project. Prior to this new appointment, she served as the Additional Chief Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
