Government Reclaims ₹90-Crore Land in Borivali; 13 Illegal Encroachments Demolished in Joint Operation

MUMBAI: In a major crackdown on illegal land occupation, authorities successfully carried out a joint anti-encroachment drive at Akurli in Borivali taluka on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. The high-stakes operation resulted in the reclamation of a prime government-owned land parcel valued at approximately ₹90 crore.

The action was taken on City Survey No. 163 A, a state-owned property located in the Saleem Compound area, directly opposite Samata Nagar Police Station in Kandivali East. Situated on Akurli Road right next to the Western Express Highway, the plot holds immense commercial and strategic value.

Commercial and Residential Structures Razzed
According to official reports, a total of 13 unauthorized structures built illegally on Revenue Department land were demolished during the drive. Among these, six were permanent commercial establishments, while the remaining seven were residential setups.

Authorities also discovered that the massive government plot was being operated illegally as a commercial, paid parking lot. To clear the area entirely, unauthorized parked vehicles were towed away by traffic personnel. In total, a sprawling area of nearly 2,000 square meters was successfully reclaimed by the state. Following the demolition, the main gates of the property were sealed, and official possession was handed over to the local Village Revenue Officers.

A Massive Inter-Agency Coordination
The successful operation was conducted under the direct guidance of several top bureaucrats, including:

Mahendra Kalyankar, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA)

Saurabh Katiyar, District Collector of Mumbai Suburban

Ganesh Misal, Additional District Collector (Encroachment/Demolition), Western Suburbs

The mega-drive required extensive inter-agency cooperation. Teams from the Revenue Department, Mumbai Police, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Fire Brigade, Traffic Department, City Survey Office, and Adani Electricity worked in tandem to ensure the operation concluded smoothly without any security lapses.

Official Puts Duty First Despite Personal Tragedy
The execution of the drive was led on the ground by Ujjwala Bhagat, Deputy District Collector (Encroachment Demolition) for Borivali-1, whose strategic follow-up and effective leadership were pivotal to the mission’s success

In an inspiring display of dedication, Ms. Bhagat chose to report to duty and personally supervise the demolition, despite having suffered a profound personal loss just days prior—her father had tragically passed away the previous Saturday. Her unwavering commitment to her public duties during a time of deep personal grief has drawn widespread admiration and praise from both colleagues and citizens alike.
