Wais Islam, Former Councillor London Borough of Tower Hamlets organises Press Conference on 50th Anniversary of BangoBondhu at Claridges Hotel London

The 50th Anniversary of Press Conference by BangoBondhu at Claridges Hotel London…8th January 2022…was organised by Wais Islam, Former Councillor for London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The event was attended by various Bangladeshi media outlets.

Fifty years ago today on “8th January” 1972 Bangabandhu held a press conference in London’s Claridges Hotel following his release from prison in West Pakistan under then President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Upon arrival in London prior to the press conference he was greeted by and had meetings with then UK PM Edward Heath and Opposition Leader Harold Wilson. At the historic press conference Bangabandu appealed for financial assistance for the war-torn new country of Bangladesh as the economy and infrastructures had been destroyed leaving behind enormous poverty and starvation after millions sacrificed their lives against the brutal Pakistani army which mercilessly killed them.

Paying tribute to BangoBandhu for all his and his family’s sacrifices and delivering the epic liberation and new nation of Bangladesh…Ex London Councillor Wais Islam said “We are extremely grateful to Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for his enormous sacrifices giving us a free and independent nation which today is enjoying huge economic growth and opportunities under the leadership of his daughter the Honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”

He added:
“Together with so many Bangladeshi TV channels and press media outlets that attended the 50th anniversary of Bangabandhu’s press conference today to cover the historic commemoration we pay tribute and offer our sincere respects to the father of the nation BangoBandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman…and to all those known and unsung heroes who lost their lives to create a free and independent Bangladesh giving us freedom and lasting dignity which West Pakistan had denied for decades.”

Born in UK five years after independence Islam further added: “Thank you Bangabandu. We will always remember you and love you and never forget you for what you have done for us, your fellow countrymen. With sincerest love from us British Bangladeshis, Joy Bangla Joy Bangabandhu.”

END.
