Former IAS officer Balasaheb Nayar-Singh on Friday took oath as the Chairperson of the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), marking a new chapter in the state’s power sector regulation.
The oath of office was administered by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at a formal ceremony held at the Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai. Chief Minister Fadnavis also extended his congratulations and best wishes to Nayar-Singh after she assumed charge.

The ceremony was attended by Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil, Minister of State for Energy Atul Save, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agarwal, Additional Chief Secretary (Energy) Asha Shukla, along with senior officials from the Energy Department and other administrative wings of the state government.
A seasoned administrator with decades of experience in public service, Nayar-Singh is expected to play a key role in strengthening the regulatory framework of Maharashtra’s electricity sector, at a time when issues of tariff rationalisation, renewable energy integration and consumer interest remain in sharp focus.

Officials expressed confidence that her administrative background and understanding of governance will contribute to effective and transparent functioning of the commission.
