Major Administrative Shuffle: Jitendra Papalkar Appointed as Mumbai’s New GST Joint Commissioner

MUMBAI – In a significant administrative move, the Government of Maharashtra has announced a reshuffle within the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) cadre. Mr. Jitendra Papalkar (IAS), who was previously serving as the Divisional Commissioner of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, has been transferred to a key financial role in the state capital.

According to an official notification issued by the General Administration Department Maharashtra on April 16, 2026, Papalkar has been appointed as the Joint Commissioner of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in Mumbai. The order, signed by Joint Secretary Subhash Umaranikar, noted that the position has been specially upgraded to a higher pay scale for this tenure.

Key Leadership Changes
The vacuum created at the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Divisional Office will be filled by Mr. G. Shrikant (IAS), the former Mission Director of the Jal Jeevan Mission in Navi Mumbai. The state government has directed both officers to facilitate an immediate handover of charges to ensure administrative continuity.

This reshuffle is seen as part of the state’s ongoing effort to strengthen its tax administration and streamline digital governance across various departments. Copies of the order have been dispatched to the offices of both the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister for formal record.
