Living Authentically: The Journey of Nutan Rathore, a Trans Man Redefining Visibility in India

Nutan Rathore, a trans man from Mumbai, has a story that resonates deeply with the realities of self-discovery and navigating the complexities of identity in India. His journey is one of determination and resilience, shedding light on the often-overlooked experiences of trans men.
For Nutan, understanding his true self wasn’t an overnight realization. Growing up, he felt an undeniable disconnect with the gender he was assigned at birth. However, expressing these feelings in a society with rigid gender norms wasn’t easy. Despite the challenges, Nutan embraced his identity, embarking on a path of personal and professional growth.
Transitioning has been a multifaceted journey for Nutan, involving medical, legal, and emotional changes. While he awaits the legal recognition of his gender on official documents, he has chosen to keep his name, Nutan, as a symbol of the identity he has built and the legacy he continues to shape.
Over the years, Nutan has worn many hats: a teacher, a freelance graphic designer, a model, and even a bronze medalist at the 2009 Commonwealth Games in karate. Each of these achievements reflects his determination to challenge stereotypes and prove that trans individuals are as capable and multifaceted as anyone else.
Among his many accolades, Nutan is a Karmaveer Global Fellowship and Karmaveer Chakra Bronze Medal Awardee, recognized by iCONGO and the United Nations. These prestigious honors celebrate his dedication to creating meaningful change and uplifting marginalized communities.

“I’ve faced my share of struggles, but I’ve also had moments of immense pride,” says Nutan. “From helping students with their education during the pandemic to stepping onto the runway as a model, every step has been about showing what trans men can achieve.”
Nutan’s advocacy goes beyond personal accomplishments. He is working on creating an app dedicated to the trans community in India. The app will provide access to healthcare, legal support, safe shelters, and job opportunities while promoting dating safety and community building. It’s his way of addressing the gaps in resources and support systems for trans individuals.
“I want to create something that simplifies life for trans men and women—a space where we can find the help and opportunities we need,” Nutan explains.
Despite his achievements, Nutan remains humble and focused on his larger goal: uplifting the trans community and fostering inclusivity. His work as a Karmaveer Fellow and advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights has given him platforms to amplify his voice and bring visibility to trans men, who are often underrepresented in conversations about gender and identity.
Through his journey, Nutan hopes to inspire others to live authentically and support one another in breaking societal barriers. “My story is just one of many. If sharing it helps even one person feel seen or supported, it’s worth it,” he says.
As Nutan continues to blaze trails and challenge norms, his journey stands as a reminder that authenticity and courage can drive real change in society.
