5 Lakh Trees, 200 Tribal Livelihoods, 100 Women Empowered: How Surjagad Ispat and MIAM Charitable Trust Are Transforming Gadchiroli.
At a time when industries are increasingly being judged by their social and environmental impact, Surjagad Ispat Pvt. Ltd. and MIAM Charitable Trust are creating a unique development model in Gadchiroli that combines environmental conservation, livelihood generation, women’s empowerment, and education.

The initiative was recently highlighted when Nitu Joshi, Director of Surjagad Ispat Pvt. Ltd. and Founder of MIAM Charitable Trust, met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and shared the progress of the Green Gadchiroli Mission, a large-scale programme aimed at making the district greener while creating sustainable opportunities for local communities. One of the most ambitious aspects of the mission is the plantation and nurturing of nearly 5 lakh trees across the region. Supported by Surjagad Ispat and implemented with community participation, the initiative is contributing to environmental restoration while creating employment at the grassroots level.
Over the last few years, more than 200 tribal men and women have been trained and employed in plantation work, nursery development and other environment-related activities. What started as a green initiative has now become a source of livelihood for hundreds of families in remote areas of Gadchiroli.
Founded in 2022, MIAM Charitable Trust has expanded its work beyond environmental projects. The organisation has trained more than 100 women in food processing, cooking, hospitality and other income-generating skills, helping them become financially independent and self-reliant.
The Trust’s work in education has also produced encouraging results. Through its free library and career guidance programmes in Nashik and Gadchiroli, more than 30 young people have secured jobs in the Police Department, Armed Forces and other government services. Several successful candidates, particularly those recruited into the police force, have publicly expressed gratitude to MIAM for providing free access to books, study material and career guidance that helped them achieve their goals.
According to local observers, the partnership between Surjagad Ispat and MIAM Charitable Trust stands out because it addresses multiple challenges simultaneously—environmental protection, tribal welfare, women’s empowerment and youth employment.

Speaking about the initiative, Nitu Joshi said, “Our vision is to ensure that development reaches the grassroots. Trees, livelihoods, education and women’s empowerment are all connected. When communities grow stronger, sustainable development becomes possible.”
With 5 lakh trees, over 200 tribal livelihoods, more than 100 women trained and over 30 government job placements, Surjagad Ispat and MIAM Charitable Trust are steadily building a model of development that is bringing measurable change to one of Maharashtra’s most important districts. For many families in Gadchiroli, the impact is already visible—not just in greener surroundings, but in better livelihoods, education and opportunities for the future.
