MSMEs & GST 2.0: A New Dawn for Small Businesses in India Says Darshana Thakkar MSME Transformation Specialist

Hello Mumbai Business Desk

Yesterday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a landmark address that marks a significant step forward for our nation—especially for MSMEs and every Indian who aspires for growth, quality, and self-reliance.

Here are the key takeaways, and why they matter:

🔍 Key Highlights from the PM’s Address

1. GST 2.0 Reforms Begin from 22 September
From the very first day of Navratri, the “next-generation” Goods & Services Tax (GST) reforms will come into force. PM Modi called this the “GST Bachat Utsav”—a savings festival for every consumer.

2. Major Relief for Households & MSMEs

Most everyday items—medicines, insurance, daily essentials—will either be tax-free or taxed at just 5%.

A large number of goods earlier under the 12% tax slab (including many MSME-produced goods) will now shift into the lower 5% rate.

3. Double Bonanza for the Poor, Neo-Middle Class & Middle Class
The address reiterated that easing of income tax (exemption up to ₹12 lakh) plus the new GST structure will lead to savings of more than ₹2.5 lakh crore annually for citizens.

4. MSMEs at the Core of Atmanirbhar Bharat
PM Modi strongly emphasized the role of MSMEs: that these small and medium enterprises are foundational to India’s growth, job creation, innovation, and global competitiveness. He urged MSMEs to focus on quality, adopt swadeshi products, and produce goods that make India proud.

5. Ease & Simplicity in Tax Structure

Simplification of GST tax slabs to two primary rates: 5% and 18%, with a higher demerit/sin rate (40%) only for luxury, sin, or non-essentials.

Removal of much of the complexity that existed earlier: fewer tax categories, less confusion around classification and compliance.

6. Atmanirbhar Bharat & “Make in India” Reinforced
The PM called for self-reliance, for consumers to choose and promote swadeshi goods, and for MSMEs and state governments to work together to strengthen manufacturing at local levels.
🌱 What This Means for MSMEs & Transformation

Lower input costs: With reduced GST on raw materials / inputs due to lower slabs, MSMEs will see cost savings, improving margins.

Simpler compliance: Fewer tax slabs, clearer classification means less administrative hassle.

Greater market demand: As consumers benefit from reduced prices, demand for affordable, quality goods—many produced by MSMEs—can rise.

Incentive for quality & branding: To compete under the “Make in India / Swadeshi” push, MSMEs can invest more in product standards, branding & outreach.

Growth & Investment: Easier taxation + higher savings power among consumers and households increases economic momentum. MSMEs can leverage this for expansion.

Call of Action

MSMEs should review their product portfolio and pricing structures in light of the new tax regime.

Ensure compliance to benefit fully—stay updated, get classification right, maintain transparent pricing.

Embrace quality, swadeshi sourcing, and branding. Consumers and policy alike are favoring locally made products.

Engage with state governments and industry bodies to access schemes, support, and markets.

Conclusion

Today’s address and the roll-out of GST 2.0 aren’t just tax reforms—they’re a statement of intent. An intent that MSMEs are central to India’s journey toward self-reliance, prosperity, and global competitiveness. If we seize this moment well, we can truly re-establish MSMEs as pillars of economic growth, job creation, and quality production.

Let’s use this “GST Bachat Utsav” as our rallying point for transformation. Every small enterprise, every artisan, every entrepreneur—this is our moment.
