Mumbai FDA Suspends Licences of Two Iconic Restaurants Shalimar and Noor Mohammadi Hotel in Bhendi Bazaar Over Major Hygiene Violations
Mumbai: Campaign launched by FDA Commissioner Mr Tukaram Kumar,In a major crackdown on food safety violations, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licences of two well-known Mughlai restaurants in South Mumbai’s Bhendi Bazaar—Shalimar Restaurant and Noor Mohammadi Hotel—following inspections that revealed serious hygiene lapses and documentation deficiencies.
According to the FDA, both restaurants, located side by side in Umarkhadi, were found violating multiple food safety norms. Officials cited poor hygiene standards, inadequate maintenance, and the absence of mandatory records as the primary reasons for suspending their licences.
Shalimar Restaurant, established in 1970, and Noor Mohammadi Hotel, founded in 1923, are among Mumbai’s most popular eateries, attracting thousands of customers for their Mughlai cuisine. Noor Mohammadi Hotel is especially famous for its signature “Sanju Baba Chicken,” a dish associated with Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt.

The FDA inspection reportedly found 26 critical violations at Shalimar Restaurant, including unhygienic kitchen conditions, missing raw material records, failure to conduct potable water testing, and poor waste management.
At Noor Mohammadi Hotel, inspectors allegedly discovered thick layers of oil and grease, open windows that could expose food to contamination, and incomplete supplier documentation, among other deficiencies.
The action forms part of the FDA’s ongoing drive to strengthen food safety standards and ensure that restaurants comply with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

The agency has directed both establishments to rectify the identified shortcomings before seeking restoration of their food business licences.
