Dongri resident saves tenants’ lives as building collapses
Former teacher Mumtaz, 65 of Dawood Fazal High School dies
Mumbai: B-Block of Razak Chamber, a 4-story Dongri building collapsed on Wednesday morning, thanks to its alert resident Abdul Qayum Shaikh who felt the tremors on Tuesday night and immediately informed its tenants to vacate their houses.
While the former teacher, Mumtaz, 65 and a spinster of Dawood Fazal High School who was all alone at her resident when the tragedy striked, succumbed to her injuries.
Local MLA Amin Patel and MP Arvind Sawant along with BMC officer from B-Ward, the fire brigade were present as rescue operations were on, which housed eight families.
“I could feel the tremor as I was with my family members at home around 11 pm when the portion started shaking. I alerted my family and the rest of the tenants to move out. I also alerted Mumtaz madam about the tremor,” says Abdul Qayum, who feels quite fortunate to see its residents alive at the same time regrets not having saved an honoured teacher.
“It was a cess building and MHADA had already informed its landlord as well as the tenants to vacate it. We have found one female trapped and died of suffocation as rescue operations are on,” said the fire officer.
