Mumbai, August 31, 2026: The Marathi Literary Association of St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, has announced ‘Natrang Ubha’ as the theme for its 2026 inaugural ceremony, celebrating the rich journey of Marathi theatre and its changing forms across generations.
The theme explores the evolution of Marathi theatre through different periods, tracing its journey from traditional and historical forms to contemporary theatre shaped by social change, new ideas and experimentation. While the form and language of theatre have evolved over the years, storytelling has remained at its core.
The inaugural ceremony will bring this journey to life through a blend of music, dance, theatre, literature and visual arts. Through these diverse art forms, the Marathi Literary Association will showcase the various dimensions of Marathi theatre, highlighting both its traditional roots and contemporary forms of expression.
The concept also focuses on the close relationship between theatre and society. Marathi theatre has provided a platform for storytelling, social commentary and the presentation of new perspectives, while simultaneously responding to the changing times.

Through ‘Natrang Ubha’, the Marathi Literary Association aims to introduce young audiences to the rich legacy of Marathi theatre and encourage students to develop a deeper connection with the Marathi language, literature and culture.
The inaugural programme will bring together different artistic disciplines to present the evolution of Marathi theatre in a manner that creates a dialogue between the past and the present. The Marathi Literary Association at St. Xavier’s College is a 102-year-old institution that has played an important role in connecting students with Marathi language, literature, culture and various forms of artistic expression. Through its programmes and activities, the association continues to encourage students to explore, engage with and appreciate Marathi arts and cultural traditions.
With ‘Natrang Ubha’, the association seeks to celebrate the enduring spirit of Marathi theatre while presenting its changing face to a new generation.
