BMC Junior Engineer Caught Red-Handed Accepting ₹2.5 Lakh Bribe

MUMBAI – In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Mumbai Unit, apprehended a public servant from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on April 24, 2026, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe.

The accused has been identified as Vishal Bhalchandra Wani, a Junior Engineer serving in the Storm Water Drain (SWD) Department of the F/North Ward, BMC.

According to official reports, the complainant had sought drainage permission for a construction site. Junior Engineer Wani allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹10,00,000 (Ten Lakhs) to facilitate this permission. Unwilling to pay the illegal gratification, the complainant approached the Mumbai ACB office on April 22, 2026, to file a formal complaint.

Following the complaint, the ACB conducted a verification process before raid.on during which it was confirmed that Wani had agreed to accept an initial installment of ₹2,50,000.

A trap was subsequently laid on April 24, 2026. During the operation, Wani was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of ₹2,50,000 from the complainant.

The ACB has initiated the process of registering a case against the accused under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

The operation was carried out under the guidance of:

  •  Sandeep Diwan, Additional Police Commissioner (ACB, Mumbai)

  •  Anil Gerdikar, Additional Police Commissioner (ACB, Mumbai)

  •  Rajendra Sangale, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ACB, Mumbai)

The trap was successfully executed by Police Inspector Sushma Khot and overseen by Assistant Commissioner of Police Pravin Chougule.
