Andheri Vikas Pratisthan threatens Mass agitation agains BMC c’s seven Hills hospital privatisation decision

The Andheri Vikas Pratisthan has strongly opposed the Brihanmumbai Corporation’s decision to privatize Seven Hills Hospital, warning of a large scale public agitation across Mumbai if the decesion is not immediately revoked.

An all-party protest march (Morcha) will be organized to oppose the privatization of Seven Hills Hospital. Speaking at a press conference organized by the social organization Andheri Vikas Pratishthan, the organization’s president and former Deputy Mayor, Rajesh Sharma, stated that the privatization of Seven Hills Hospital would deprive nearly 20 lakh (2 million) residents from Versova to Ghatkopar of vital healthcare services.

Sharma emphasized that after KEM Hospital, Seven Hills is the only facility with the capacity to serve such a massive population. He alleged that the hospital’s transfer is being executed by completely ignoring the public interest. To save Seven Hills Hospital, the organization plans to launch a peaceful, Gandhian-style protest, which will include mass signature campaigns, sit-ins (dharnas), and public demonstrations.

Hospital Built Under PPP Model Handed Over for ₹183 Crore

Diliprao Mane, the working president of the organization, highlighted the hospital’s critical infrastructure and history:

  • Massive Scale: Spanning 16.5 acres, this 1,500-bed facility equipped with 36 operation theaters was built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model on BMC-owned land in Marol, Andheri (East), and was inaugurated in July 2010.

  • Pandemic Contribution: The hospital played a monumental role during the COVID-19 pandemic, successfully treating over 64,000 patients.

  • The Allegation: Mane alleged that despite having a market valuation of over ₹5,000 crore, the entire hospital is being handed over for a mere ₹183 crore to Mrs. Capri Global Holding Pvt. Ltd., a company associated with industrialist Mukesh Ambani.

Promod Sawant, Dinkar Tawde, Clive Dias, Prithviraj Mhaske, Shivnath Khairnar, and Harshad Modi were also present at the press conference. They noted that while the hospital opened as one of the city’s largest private-partnered healthcare facilities, it has unfortunately remained mired in controversies for most of its operational history.
