Iconic Bagdadi Restaurant Wins ‘Best Indian Casual Dining’ at Times Food & Nightlife Awards 2026.

Hello Mumbai City Desk
Mumbai:
In a proud moment for South Mumbai’s culinary heritage, the legendary Bagdadi Restaurant has been honoured with the prestigious “Best Indian Casual Dining” award at the Times Food & Nightlife Awards 2026.
The award ceremony, hosted by The Times of India, celebrated the finest names in the city’s vibrant food and hospitality industry. Representing Bagdadi, the award was proudly received by its fourth-generation owner, Saud Atique Ahmed.

A Culinary Legacy Since the 1890s
Established in the late 19th century, Bagdadi Restaurant began its journey by serving labourers who migrated to Mumbai to work on iconic landmarks like the Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Over the decades, it has evolved into a landmark in itself—deeply rooted in the city’s history and culture.

Located just behind the Taj Mahal Palace in Colaba, Bagdadi continues to attract food lovers with its authentic flavours and timeless charm.

Where Nostalgia Lives On
Walking into Bagdadi is like stepping back in time. With its high ceilings, old wooden beams, and shared bench seating, the restaurant retains its vintage character. Its iconic menu board—displayed in English, Marathi, and Urdu—still carries the traditional “half plate” pricing, reflecting a legacy that has remained untouched by modern trends.

Bagdadi doesn’t attempt to recreate nostalgia—it simply lives in it.
Signature Taste & Culinary Innovation
One of Bagdadi’s standout features is its early adoption of one of South Mumbai’s largest traditional tandoors, used to prepare its famous oversized Khubz (soft, chewy rotis). Known for its rich, flavourful Indian dishes, the restaurant has built a loyal following across generations.

A Favourite Among Legends
Over the years, Bagdadi has hosted an impressive list of patrons, including:
Hollywood actress Julia Roberts
Bollywood stars John Abraham, Sanjay Dutt, Anurag Kashyap
Renowned chef Anthony Bourdain
Celebrity chef Kshipra Khanna
Cricketers Ravi Shastri and Suresh Raina
Legendary artist M. F. Husain
Singer Lucky Ali.

From freedom fighters in the past to defence personnel and global celebrities, Bagdadi has remained a melting pot of diverse cultures and stories.
Carrying Forward a Timeless Legacy
Currently led by third-generation owner Atique Ahmed and fourth-generation successor Saud Ahmed, Bagdadi continues to preserve its heritage while embracing modern recognition.

Winning the Times Food & Nightlife Award 2026 is not just an achievement—it is a testament to Bagdadi’s enduring legacy, authentic cuisine, and its deep-rooted connection with Mumbai’s soul.
