Mumbai 2 March: A grand farewell ceremony was organised in honour of Senior Inspector Rajendra Shanta Kisanrao Shirsath of the State Excise Department, who retired this month after completing 28 years of distinguished service. The event was held on Friday night at The Recreation Club Andheri West in Mumbai and was attended by senior excise officials, colleagues, industry representatives and well-wishers.

The evening witnessed the presence of top officials from the Excise Department, including Joint Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and senior officers from across the region. Mr Shirsath was felicitated with a trophy, shawl and bouquet by President Sunil Chavan in recognition of his long and dedicated service to the department.

Over nearly three decades, Shirsath earned a reputation as a disciplined, result-oriented and fearless officer, particularly known for his strong action against illegal liquor rackets and his expertise in case detection and investigation. Colleagues recalled his tenure in Thane as one of his most impactful postings, where he led several successful operations.

Deputy Commissioner Ravindra Ahvle praised Shirsath’s sincerity and commitment, stating that the department would always remember his dedicated service. Divisional Deputy Commissioner Nilesh Sangade described him as a highly disciplined and career-focused officer whose contribution to the department over 28 years deserves salute and respect.
President Sunil Chavan, who worked closely with Shirsath in Thane, said retirement marks not an end but the beginning of a new chapter. He highlighted Shirsath’s belief in strong human relationships and his balanced approach towards professional and family life.

“Retirement offers freedom to live life on one’s own terms,” he said, extending his best wishes to Shirsath and his wife.
Several officers shared personal memories of working with him. Joint Commissioner Mr Prasad Surve, who first met Shirsath in 1999, remembered his supportive and helpful nature towards staff. Mr Thakur credited him for mentoring juniors in investigation techniques and for never compromising once he took up a case. “He ensured every case reached its logical conclusion,” he remarked.

Officers including Mr Jagtap, Mr Pritam Shekade, Mr Rajput, Mr Bargaje,Mr Sudhir Pokale and others described him as a role model who maintained a fine balance between professional integrity and personal responsibilities. Many highlighted his deep knowledge of government resolutions and notifications, and his ability to implement policies effectively at the ground level.

Representatives from the hospitality industry were also present at the function. Dr Satish Shetty, President of the Hotel And Restaurant Association (AHAAR), congratulated Shirsath on his retirement and acknowledged his cooperative approach towards the industry while ensuring compliance with government norms. He noted that Shirsath was widely respected among industry members, many of whom attended the farewell event.
Mr Ahirarao, Superintendent of Arthur Road Jail, recalled interacting with Shirsath during his tenure in Thane, especially in cases involving illegal liquor raids. He described him as a dynamic and determined officer whose personality left a lasting impression.

Emotions ran high as colleagues, including Heena Popunkar , Vijay Dhumal and others, expressed gratitude for his mentorship and guidance over the years. Poems were recited by fellow officers as a tribute to his service, reflecting the deep respect he commanded within the department.


In his concluding address, an emotional Shirsath thanked his colleagues and seniors for their unwavering support throughout his career. “This is a very emotional moment for me. I cannot believe how 28 years passed so quickly. I am grateful to everyone who stood by me during my service,” he said while bidding farewell to the department.

The evening concluded on a note of appreciation and celebration, marking the end of an illustrious career and the beginning of a new journey for one of the State Excise Department’s respected officers.
