*Mumbai*: Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam today slammed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over the fact that almost 55,000 buildings in the city are occupied without the mandatory Occupation Certificate (OC). The question of Mumbaikars residing in buildings without OC was raised after 4 residents were charred to death as fire broke out at Crystal Towers in Parel on Wednesday.

Sanjay Nirupam said, “It is the duty of the BMC to grant Occupation Certificate to every building that abides by the rules and conditions laid down by the civic body. The BMC has to take appropriate legal actions against the builders who are fooling innocent Mumbaikars by selling flats without an OC. Instead, they simply levy extra water and property taxes on such buildings. Why does the BMC feel that money is important than lives of Mumbaikars? Why isn’t action being taken against such builders and developers?”

“The BMC cannot simply blame the developers. The fact that developers are being able to let citizens stay in more than 55,000 buildings in Mumbai right under the nose of the BMC is shameful and it is even worse that we needed an unfortunate incident like that of Parel’s Crystal Tower to highlight this huge problem that exists right in the middle of the city”, added Nirupam.

Sanjay Nirupam stated that levying extra taxes on the people of Mumbai for simply extracting money and filling the coffers of the BMC is like holding the citizens hostage while the civic body has failed to take action against the errant developers which is highly unacceptable.
