Mumbai: The contribution of freedom fighter and prominent nationalist Barrister Mohammad Yasin Nurie (M.Y. Nurie) to the All India Khilafat Committee has once again come into focus through an insightful account shared by his grandson, Owais Nurie
Speaking about his grandfather’s historic role, Owais Nuri highlighted M.Y. Nurie’s contribution to the Khilafat Movement and his commitment to India’s freedom struggle. He also spoke about the values of patriotism, unity and national service that guided M.Y. Nurie during the freedom movement.

The Khilafat Movement played an important role in India’s freedom struggle, bringing together large sections of Indian society around the issue of the Ottoman Caliphate and contributing to wider political mobilisation against British rule.

Khilafat Movement Was a Joint Struggle Against British Rule, Says Owais Nurie at Byculla’s Khilafat House

Speaking to media persons during the annual Eid-e-Milad celebrations at Khilafat House in Byculla, Owais Nurie, grandson of Barrister Mohammad Yasin Nurie, emphasized that the All India Khilafat Committee was a collective movement against the British Empire and its policy of “divide and rule.” He highlighted that the movement was not exclusive to the Muslim community, but rather a joint campaign championed by prominent freedom fighters, including Mahatma Gandhi, Sarojini Naidu, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Maulana Shaukat Ali, and Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar. He noted that Mahatma Gandhi himself served as president of the Khilafat Committee, while Barrister M.Y. Nurie headed the All India Khilafat Committee until 1971.

Elaborating on the historical legacy of the landmark, “Mr. Nurie shared that the Khilafat House property was donated by his relatives, the Subhani Brothers. He explained that his grandfather, Barrister Mohammed Yasin Nurie, played a key role in convincing the Subhani Brothers and his other relatives to donate the property for the Khilafat movement.”underscoring their families’ significant contributions to the institution over the decades. Marking the occasion, a special display featuring historical documents, original pamphlets, and rare photographs related to Barrister M.Y. Nurie was presented to the audience to commemorate his enduring legacy in India’s freedom struggle.
