Hello Mumbai National Desk;
The demand for travel dignity and accessibility for persons with disabilities in Mumbai has gained powerful momentum. After Union Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale urged the Maharashtra Government to offer 100% fare waiver in Mumbai Metro, the appeal has now received strong political support.
Mumbai Congress President and Member of Parliament Varsha Gaikwad has written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, endorsing the demand originally raised by senior journalist, “patient-friend” and disability rights activist. In her letter, Gaikwad stressed that the existing 25% concession offered to disabled commuters is inadequate and fails to reflect the economic, medical and mobility challenges they face daily.
Calling metro travel a “lifeline for dignity, livelihood, education and healthcare,” she asserted that free and barrier-free metro access is not charity, but a rightful step toward social justice and inclusion.
Gaikwad reminded the government that the metro is the safest and most accessible mode of transport in a city like Mumbai, and therefore must remain fully open to those who depend on it the most. Granting a full fare waiver, she said, would reduce financial strain and empower thousands of disabled citizens to live independently.
Her appeal has resonated widely with commuters, disability organisations and common Mumbaikars, who are urging the state to act immediately and set a national example in inclusive urban mobility.
As voices grow stronger, all eyes are now on the Maharashtra government — will Mumbai Metro become truly accessible for all?
While Speaking with Hello Mumbai News over phone Mr Deepak Kethke a Senior journalist and activist said,” We are thankful to Athavle ji he always support to us I have given a letter to him he extended his support and assured to all support on this issue”,
