Hello Mumbai NewsÂ
How can Indian MSMEs strengthen their presence in the US market while complying with international business standards?
Ms Jennifer Isaac
Leveraging the USA market Expanding into the U.S. market presents a strong opportunity for Indian MSMEs, especially when approached through three critical pillars: compliance, differentiation, and strategic partnerships. To begin with, businesses must ensure that their products and processes meet U.S. regulatory, quality, and safety standards. Leveraging export facilitation centres and trade-connect platforms can help MSMEs better understand certification requirements and navigate the complexities of entering a highly regulated market.
Hello Mumbai NewsÂ
What are the biggest opportunities for Indian MSMEs in international trade over the next five years?
Ms Jennifer Isaac
Over the coming five years, Indian MSMEs are poised to benefit from growing opportunities across sectors such as textiles and apparel, engineering goods, food processing, handicrafts, and digital services—industries that are central to India’s export growth agenda. The recently introduced Export Promotion Mission (EPM), supported by substantial government investment, is designed to strengthen MSME participation in global trade. It focuses on enabling easier access to affordable trade finance, enhancing product quality and global branding, and supporting businesses in exploring and entering new international markets.
Hello Mumbai NewsÂ
From your HR experience, what are the most common talent and leadership challenges faced by MSMEs today?
Ms Jennifer Isaac
From an HR point of view, MSMEs face some very real and everyday challenges. Finding and keeping the right talent is not easy, and at the same time, building future leaders and putting basic HR systems in place can be difficult when budgets are tight. In many MSMEs, a lot still depends on the founder or family members. While that brings strength, it can also make it harder to delegate, manage performance effectively, or plan for succession in a structured way.

Another challenge is that MSMEs often cannot offer the same salaries or learning opportunities as large companies. This sometimes leads to people leaving at crucial stages, creating skill gaps just when the business needs stability. On top of this, bringing in HR consultants can be expensive. While their guidance is valuable, the fees are often too high for MSMEs to afford comfortably, which means many businesses have to manage without that external support.
Hello Mumbai NewsÂ
How can MSMEs build a globally competitive workforce while managing limited resources?
Ms Jennifer Isaac
MSMEs don’t need large teams to become globally competitive—they need the right mindset around people. For me, it really comes down to focusing on culture, capability, and collaboration. To begin with, even simple and practical HR systems can make a big difference. Clearly defined roles, basic performance tracking, and structured learning plans—these don’t have to be complex or expensive, but they do need to be consistent. MSMEs can also benefit a lot from partnerships. Working with training institutes, using online learning platforms, or tapping into government skill development programs can help teams build skills in key areas like quality standards, export processes, digital marketing, and even crosscultural understanding. Most importantly, creating the right culture is a real differentiator. When people feel valued, included, and see a clear path for growth, they are more likely to stay and contribute. Even with limited financial resources, a strong, values-driven environment can help MSMEs build committed and capable teams.
Hello Mumbai NewsÂ
What skills should young entrepreneurs and MSME professionals develop to succeed in international business?
Ms Jennifer Isaac
I believe the focus should be on building three key skill areas: understanding global business, digital capabilities, and developing strong people skills. It’s important to be comfortable with how global trade works and how to manage risks when dealing with international markets. Digital skills are no longer optional. And finally, people skills truly make the difference. Clear communication, the ability to negotiate, and understanding different cultures are all essential when building long-term relationships with international partners, investors, and customers.
Hello Mumbai NewsÂ
How important are digital transformation, AI, and automation for MSMEs looking to expand globally?
Ms Jennifer Isaac
Importance of digital transformation, AI, and automation For MSMEs that want to grow and compete globally, digital transformation, AI, and automation are no longer choices—they are becoming essential.
Today, AI-powered tools can support MSMEs in very practical ways, from understanding demand patterns and setting the right pricing to identifying customer segments and even accessing credit through fintech-led trade finance solutions. At the same time, automation across production, inventory, and logistics can bring much-needed consistency. It helps improve turnaround times, reduce errors, and meet the quality expectations and service commitments required in international markets. What I see as equally important is the use of digital platforms for marketing, sales, and documentation. When MSMEs adopt these tools effectively, they can lower transaction costs and connect directly with global buyers, without always depending on intermediaries.

Hello Mumbai NewsÂ
What role does the Indian Chamber of International Business play in connecting Indian businesses with international markets?
Ms Jennifer Isaac
ICIB’s role in connecting Indian businesses internationally The Indian Chamber of International Business plays an important role in helping Indian businesses connect with global opportunities, not just through representation but through meaningful engagement. Its strength lies in bringing together policy advocacy, trade delegations, and structured networking in a way that creates real pathways for growth. We help them understand the nuances of business culture, expectations, and standards so they can participate with confidence. At the same time, ICIB continues to support MSMEs through knowledge-sharing platforms, focused sector discussions, and collaborative initiatives.

Recommended government initiatives and policy reforms To accelerate MSME exports and enhance global competitiveness, consider the following recommendations:

b. Export Facilitation Centers (EFCs): These centers are established in various regions and aim to provide direct support.

Hello Mumbai NewsÂ
Can you share a success story of an MSME that successfully entered international markets through strategic guidance and networking?
Ms Jennifer Isaac
MSME success story (illustrative) FabIndia is an excellent example of how an MSME can achieve long-term business success while creating positive social impact. Its commitment to sustainability, quality, and community empowerment demonstrates that small and medium enterprises can contribute significantly to economic growth, employment generation, and the preservation of traditional skills. The government’s focus on sectors like textiles and engineering goods, along with schemes for trade finance, market access, and logistics support, has enabled such MSMEs to participate in international fairs, secure certifications, and access new buyers.

Looking ahead, what is your vision for India’s MSME sector by 2030?
Ms Jennifer Isaac
Vision for India’s MSME sector by 2030 By 2030, I hope to see India’s MSME sector evolve into a globally connected and digitally driven ecosystem that plays an even greater role in exports, innovation, and job creation. I believe the future of MSMEs lies in adopting sustainable business practices, embracing innovation, and building agile, efficient operations. For me, achieving this vision means creating an environment where entrepreneurs, regardless of where they are located, have the opportunity to grow and succeed. I believe that stronger global partnerships, better trade infrastructure, easier access to digital finance, and practical capacity-building programmes will empower MSMEs, especially those in smaller towns and rural communities, to confidently compete and thrive in international markets.
